Tomy Megasketcher- A review

We recently received a Tomy Megasketcher to review. The megasketcher is a magnetic drawing board which comes with a pen and four stamps.

I have distant memories of my Etch a Sketch and something a little more similar, but my memory is of something "a lot more bumpy". The Megasketcher creates smooth images and with the slider it is possible to instantly erase images created.

The Tomy Megasketcher is suitable for children aged 3 and up. Although in saying that, the boys at 22 months have been having a lot of fun with it.

Squeaks has been really taken with it. She has enjoyed making pictures, and she loves the idea that she can make them disappear (the joy of magnets and metal powder!).

When we received the Megasketcher, of course it was an instant success. Squeaks and I had great fun, probably for near on an hour, making pictures, drawing faces, and trying to guess what the other was drawing.
I was really impressed by the way she focused on drawing, and despite a few "I don't know how to do that", she was really good at giving it a go when encouraged.

I obviously loved the fact we were messing around on the Megasketcher rather than the usual reams of paper- less tidying up and environmentally friendly, what a bonus!

You do need to keep an eye on where the stamps might end up, fortunately the pen is attached which is not really possible with the stamps!

We played mainly with the stamps to create pictures, using the pen for finishing touches.
But for me, we are only just starting to explore the real benefits of the board.
I think this is going to be a really good way to get Squeaks involved in reading and writing.
We've already made sure we can both draw shapes, and things that are represented by certain colours, as well as practising numbers by counting the objects drawn.
It seems to be, that when the time is right, we can begin practising forming the letters of the alphabet and writing.

But for now, it is something that Squeaks will take out to play with at least once a day. Something she is as happy to play on her own as she is with others in her company.
At 3 and a half this seems the ideal time for her to have this toy. Squeaks has started nursery school and as part of this has objects and words relating to 'the letter of the week'. The megasketcher seems an easy way to reinforce this through through a toy which is enjoyed, of course the trick will be maintaining this balance!

The Megasketcher is available for £14.99, I think this is a good price to pay for a gift which potentially, if used as I think it can be, will support learning and development. I think compared to other similar products it's a great quality board and hardwearing enough to survive the joy that little people bring.

  1. I've been thinking of adding something like this to Tigger's Christmas List, I can remember Roo really enjoying hers when she was a similar age. Your review has made me add it for sure x
