The Wonderful Wizard of Oz- Book review

Some books are so beautiful that they get kept on shelves as special treats.
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" has been published this month in a gorgeous pop-up.

This beautiful retelling by Stella Gurney, with illustations by Lorna Freytag, means we have a book which entralls Squeaks.
As it as tabs to pull and wheels to turn, it is not a bedtime book as such. Instead it has become our lazy Saturday afternoon book. Well the boys nap, we get to sit and relive Oz.

Because, or course, this is a favourite tale.
And given the popularity of Oz- from Walt Disney's new film: 'Oz: The Great and Powerful', to West End shows including 'The Wizard of Oz' and news that Wicked is going on tour and will be in Cardiff for my little girl's 5th birthday- well, falling in love with a pair of sparkly slippers is easier than ever.

And of course my photos don't begin to do justice.
The pop-up scene takes me back to books of my childhood, which I had missed when buying 'pop ups' for Squeaks which lacked impact.
The book has a lot more text than the books we typically read, which makes it the perfect afternoon read. Our bedtime books tend to be shorter as my daughter has yet to develop the patience to wait a night for the remainder of the tale.
This book with its intricacies and illustrations mean we enjoy the book together, taking the time to explore it.

We are really excited about Oz, and I am so pleased to have found a book which Squeaks treats as her special treat, as our time together.

For fans of The Wizard this is a wonderful way to engage children.

'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', a magical retelling by Stella Gurney,  is available now from Carlton Books.
